The green and low-carbon transformation of China's steel industry has achieved remarkable results

Xinhua News Agency, the reporter recently learned from the China Iron and Steel Association that in recent years, China's steel industry has accelerated the transformation and upgrading, actively promoted the green and sustainable development of the industry, achieved remarkable results in energy conservation and consumption reduction, and greatly improved the green development level of the industry.

From 2014 to 2023, the average comprehensive energy consumption per ton of steel of key statistics iron and steel enterprises will decrease by 5.87%; sulfur dioxide emissions per ton of steel decreased by 81%; The emission of soot and dust per ton of steel decreased by 70.8%.

It is understood that the carbon emissions of China's steel industry account for 15% of the country's total carbon emissions, and it is the industry with the largest carbon emissions among the 31 manufacturing categories in China. In recent years, through the implementation of three major transformation projects: digital transformation, ultra-low emissions, and extreme energy efficiency, the green and low-carbon transformation of China's steel industry has achieved remarkable results.

In terms of environmental protection, up to now, 95 iron and steel enterprises in China's iron and steel industry have completed the whole process of ultra-low emission transformation and publicity, involving a crude steel production capacity of about 450 million tons.

In terms of energy conservation and efficiency improvement, in 2023, the steel association will focus on cultivating 58 enterprises to achieve different reductions in the energy consumption level of blast furnaces, converters, coke ovens, electric furnaces and other processes.

In terms of low-carbon transformation, there are currently 23 units and 57 projects focusing on the research and development of eight world-leading low-carbon technologies, such as hydrogen-rich carbon cycle blast furnace technology and hydrogen-based melt reduction technology.

The relevant person in charge of the China Iron and Steel Association said that it is necessary to improve the "double carbon" standard measurement system and deepen the research on the carbon accounting system, carry out differentiated incentive and restraint policies in the implementation of a number of policies, support the improvement of steel industry standards and technological innovation, increase policy support for the use and construction of green electricity by enterprises, and further promote the green development of the steel industry.
